The Climate
The Climate of the Reserve
The Canary Islands`climate is determined by several factors: the trade winds, damp winds which combined with the orography of the islands produce climatic stability all year round, the cold current of the Canary Islands which keeps the water temperature lower than expected, their geographical latitude, close to the tropic of Cancer. All this together with their proximity to Africa, and their condition as islands give them a subtropical climate.
The special weather conditions of the Nature Reserve of the Dunes, the scarce rainfall and high temperatures are due to its southerly position, safe from the the north easterly winds, damp winds which cause rain to fall on the north side of the island.
The average annual temperature of the Nature Reserve is 23.5C, the difference between summer and winter is only a few degrees. The average temperature in winter is 21º and 30º in summer. The nights are mild.
There are scarce showers on the Nature Reserve, the average annual rainfall is less than 100mm. There are only 10 or 15 days of annual rainfall per year, usually in February and November. There is an average of 259 sunny days, 87 cloudy and 13 overcast days per year.
