Health holidays have historically been considered as one of the origins of tourism around the world and the same goes for Gran Canaria. The first organized trips to the Island date back to the second half of the 19th century. Visitors to Gran Canaria were attracted by reports of miraculous cures and also by the medical recommendations regarding the excellent therapeutic conditions that our climate and its mineral waters offered. So, many sick people from all over Europe travelled to Gran Canaria, ready to try all of these natural wonders first-hand.
The passing of time has consolidated these riches and confirmed Gran Canaria’s international prestige as an idyllic centre for health treatments and rest. The tourist offer continues to complement conventional tourism, but with its own identity.
Gran Canaria has the added advantage of being an island where there are many hours of daylight and sunshine all year round. Doctors agree that a patient’s recovery is always faster when surrounded by a pleasant environment. This is precisely one of the great natural resources that the Island offers.
In addition to all of this, no matter where visitors stay, they are always close to the sea and the countryside. In just a few hours, you can be swimming at one of Gran Canaria’s many beaches or immersed in an inland forest.
Alongside these advantages, heavily endorsed by most prestigious doctors, it offers wonderfully diverse scenery and can put anyone in good spirits.
Darkness disheartens. Gran Canaria, on the other hand, provides light, happiness and sunshine, which is combined with the purely medical specialized treatments.
The excellent properties of the subterranean water in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria have been common knowledge since the end of the 19th century, coinciding with the time when there was a substantial British community. Even at that time, there was talk of the streams of hot water with great medicinal properties in the capital of Gran Canaria. These sources continue to be maintained nowadays in the centre of the city. Its natural tributary is rich in minerals that are used to great effect in health treatments. Furthermore, it has the advantage of being a city spa enabling visitors to the city to combine their work, cultural and leisure activities with current health obsessions. These natural waters flow at a temperature of 26 ºC.
Gran Canaria continues to hide practically untouched areas along the coast. Its sediments are very rich in content and neurological properties which were unknown until now. Although they are coastal areas which provide great environmental protection, experts are aware of the wonderful natural benefits they possess from their volcanic sediment-based content.
