Hand Mills

The mill stone was used to grind the toasted barley that went to make their "gofio", part of the staple diet among the aboriginal peoples of the Canary Islands.

It is usually made from circular-shaped porous stone. It consists of two stones with a central circular orifice, where a stick is fixed to act as a rotation axis. The toasted barley is put in through this same hole. The upper stone is then turned, while the lower mill stone remains still. Small holes opened in the surface of the upper stone give the stick a grip on the stone, making it possible to turn it. The mill works very well, giving finely ground barley.
