Travelling with friends

A special menu for optimists

Over the last few years, scientists have been trying to explain the phenomenon of the growing number of optimistic people who land on the island of Gran Canaria each year. The numbers are constantly growing.

So why do so many people make for the island to hang out with their friends and have a great time together?

It could be that they come attracted by the great climate on the island that allows you to forget your cares as you bask in the sun: there is no possibility of being sad (sun absence disorder) here.

Or maybe these bright and lively people are attracted by the possibilities afforded by the geography of the island, with its mild sun, myriads of beaches and heady mixture of mountain peaks and sea beds to explore. This is a clear draw for people who need to work off excess energy doing sports. Whatever it is, more and more people come, thirsty for good times, to learn surfing, scuba diving or to do mountain biking, hiking or rock climbing.

Because Gran Canaria is the ideal place to do any kind of outdoor sport, be it on land or at sea. You can plan a different menu of sports for each day of the week and month. The combinations are limitless.

Maybe the fact that people are so impertinently happy is that they spend so much time outdoors socialising. There are festivities and events to attend all year round from North to South and from East to West on the island of Gran Canaria: fireworks and fire-eaters, mud and clay baths, soaking fully dressed in the sea, beating the sea with branches of palm and doing the rain dance or the almond tree in flower festivity are just some of the local celebrations that you can revel in, making it hard to be sad.

The island is a community place, where outdoor life is lived to the full, on the terrace bars, in the local celebrations and dances. Even the shyest of the shy come out of their shells here. And with long pleasant nights in pleasant company, people talk into the small hours of the morning, reluctant to go to bed.

This whole combination of factors then may be the reason for the permanent optimism of the islanders all year round. The experts are so intrigued that they have decided to try it for themselves. Of course, the fieldwork will have to be day and night, night and day, in inter-disciplinary teams and no conclusive results will be obtained for a long time.
