Description

TheMartín Chirino Art and Thought Foundation opened its doors in March 2015, at the emblematic Castle of La Luz in Las Palmas. It opened with an initial permanent exhibition made up of 25 works featuring all creative stages of the Canarian author. It covers everything from the Poetic and Useless Tool Series (1956-57) and the Viento (wind, 1968) to its derivatives, including Viento Solano (2008), My country is a rock (2006) and Afrocán (2012). The basic aim of the Foundation is to promote the collection, study and dissemmination of the artistic heritage and the figure of Martín Chirino, as well as the complete catalogue of his works.

The Castle of La Luz is the oldest defence fortress in the Canaries, and was erected towards the end of the 15th century. From the 18th century onwards, it acquired a more symbolic significance, until the middle of last century, when the structure was declared a Site of Cultural Interest. It was refurbished as an artistic venue by the architectural firm Nieto Sobejano, and was inaugurated in January of 2014, by the then prince and princess don Felipe and doña Letizia. ?Mi wish is that my works can be observed in a natural setting, as if they had always been there?, the sculptor points out.
