Cyclists are quite a different breed of tourists with two very clear needs. The first is to find new and steeper slopes to conquer and the second is to wheel down the slopes to a magnificent natural backdrop of scenery and spectacular landscapes.
Cyclists prefer good weather and the type of scenic routes that make them glad to be alive and that can be relived on dull and dreary days over and over again in the mind’s eye.
What better place to bike than on Gran Canaria then? The island has everything – sun, mountains and beaches. And it offers one of the toughest mountain climb tests for cyclists to be found in the whole of Europe, the Escalada internacional al Pico de Las Nieves. And tough it is. Not for the weak at heart, this is a test for true cyclists, a test for the best. Up for it?
The steep climb to the peak of Pico de las Nieves is part of the Vuelta Cicloturista Internacional Maspalomas-Gran Canaria, a test over five stages and 392,4 kms.
The competition is held from the 3rd to the 8th of December, when it’s perfect cycling weather in Gran Canaria. Because here it’s not like the title of the film, that bikes are only for Summer. Bikes are for all year round here, on this miniature continent of an island, in the part declared Reserve of the Biosphere.
