This story begins with a journey, as occurs with so many things. Half a century has gone by since one fine day a Swedish traveler arrived at Santa Lucía, to the southeast of Gran Canaria.
Santa Lucía was celebrating the fiestas of Our Lady of La Luz on this day. This was born out of an age old tradition, and the protagonist of our story just happened to come by.
Our traveler just happened to be in a town where the fiestas transported him, in one fell swoop, to the Swedish city of Luléa.
Where else but Santa Lucía, in what other town could he have found a mirror image of his own Swedish Lucía?
This was the start, which signalled the initiative by D. Vicente Sánchez Araña, that would lead to the creation of the Queen of Light Board together with a group of Grancanarians. It has become a bridge between two remote outposts, which have now been brought closer. They are responsible for successfully forging a tradition which was already quite consolidated, namely the visit of the Swedish Lucía here to our island, year after year.
This year we are commemorating the 56th anniversary of the meetings with the Swedish Lucía.
This annual visit signals the start to Christmas. It has a wide programme of events, to celebrate the arrival on the island of the Queen of the North.
