The city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has four traditional markets. Three of them are located in the lower part of the city and one in the upper area, offering a wide variety of products such as fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, cheese, flowers, wines and local pastries.

Mercado de Vegueta: The history of the city

Inaugurated in 1858, the Mercado de Vegueta is the oldest market in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, located within the city’s historic quarter. This traditional food market is an emblematic place. The Mercado de Vegueta is home to stalls selling fruit, meat, delicatessen products, fish, dairy and cheeses, as well as an organic food shop, among other businesses. On the market’s façade, visitors will still find shops that reflect the historic character and personality of the area: bars serving authentic churros with hot chocolate, a shoe shop and a florist line the market’s exterior.

Mercado Central: The heart of the capital

The Mercado Central stands as the largest market in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, located in the Alcaravaneras area, close to the lively commercial district of Mesa y López. The essence of the Mercado Central lies within, where the diversity of products blends with the bustling atmosphere of locals and visitors alike. Among its more than 100 stalls, the aromas and colours of fresh fruit and vegetables, together with the quality of the meat and fish, create a scene full of life and colour.

Mercado del Puerto: Food and leisure in a unique setting by Las Canteras beach

The Mercado del Puerto enjoys a prime location very close to Las Canteras beach, next to the area of La Puntilla and the neighbourhood of La Isleta. Recognised as a Site of Cultural Interest, the market has become a benchmark for food and leisure in the city. It was the first market in Gran Canaria to incorporate gastronomy into its stalls, becoming a pioneer of this format on the island.

It features 14 food stalls serving Spanish and international cuisine. The food stalls are open from Monday to Saturday, while the dining stalls operate with varied hours throughout the week.

Retail and Tasting Stalls: Tuesday to Thursday from 10:00 to 16:00 and from 20:00 to 24:00; Friday and Saturday from 10:00 to 24:00; Sunday from 12:00 to 20:00.

Mercado de Altavista: Produce and community in the upper area of the capital

The Mercado Municipal de Altavista is located in the Ciudad Alta district of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. With more than 60 stalls, the Mercado de Altavista offers a wide variety of local products.

Stepping beyond the capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, we find farmer’s markets, open at weekends. These are found mainly across the midland municipalities and the island’s mountainous areas. They are ideal places to discover fresh, locally sourced produce and everything the fertile lands of Gran Canaria have to offer.

Mercado Agrícola y Artesanal de Vega de San Mateo

The Mercado Agrícola y Artesanal de Vega de San Mateo is one of Gran Canaria’s most iconic and popular markets, serving as the principal weekend attraction in the town of Vega de San Mateo. It currently hosts around 105 stalls spread across two large halls and an outdoor area.

It is particularly noted for its selection of aromatic herbs and medicinal plants, as well as artisan products such as mojos (traditional Canarian sauce), jams and liqueurs.

Mercado Ecológico de Valleseco ‘EcoValles’

The Organic Market of Valleseco, known as EcoValles, is the first market of its kind on the island of Gran Canaria. It is located in Valleseco. Among the products available at EcoValles’ organic stalls are fruit, vegetables, bread and a range of organically produced goods. This market is also an ideal place to sample typical Canarian dishes. Visitors can also taste and purchase cider produced in Valleseco, an alcoholic beverage made from fermented apple juice, recognised and awarded both nationally and internationally.

Mercado de Guía

Opened in 2021, the Mercado de Guía is a spacious, modern venue providing an enjoyable shopping experience. Visitors will find a variety of products including fruit, vegetables, handmade pasta, international goods, queques (sponge cakes), and a selection of local cheeses, notably Flor de Guía cheese.

The Mercadillo de Teror

With its street stalls set around the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pino, takes place every Sunday from 9:00 to 15:00, and, like other markets on Gran Canaria, it offers a wide variety of cheeses and the freshest seasonal produce. Most popular of all are the typical Canarian chorizos and black puddings produced in the town’s butcher’s shops.

Feria Km 0 (Local Produce Fair) Gran Canaria

This initiative organises travelling events across the island with the aim of promoting the sale of local produce, supporting farmers, livestock breeders and producers, and encouraging a more sustainable and healthy model of consumption.

Gran Canaria Me Gusta

An annual event organised by the Island Council of Gran Canaria, it promotes local produce, the island’s gastronomy and its primary sector. Held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, it brings together producers, chefs, artisans and visitors around exhibition stands, tastings, workshops, live cooking demonstrations and talks.
