The light of Custo shines in Gran Canaria

“The landscape here is truly inspirational”, so says the creative soul of Custo Barcelona in his appearance at Gran Canaria Moda Cálida.

Custo Dalmau is a designer who looks like he comes from the future. Or from another planet. So it is no wonder then that his latest collection carries the name of ‘Light years’. The creator behind the Custo Barcelona brand alighted on the island with his galactic space ship and shone like the stars themselves in this year’s 2017 Gran Canaria Moda Cálida.

‘Light years’ has left a trail on the island like a passing comet. “The landscape here is truly inspirational”, Custo exclaimed following his latest incursion on the island. His business empire now covers all five continents, with nearly two thousand multibrand points of sale. This is how far his galaxy of tones and patterns has expanded, with a personality on a par with designer Custo himself.

“We have called the collection we have brought to Gran Canaria Moda Cálida ‘Light years’ because the common thread that brings all the pieces together is like a dazzling streak of light”, explains Dalmau, whose links to the island have tightened like celluloide ribbons following the filming of scenes on the island with one of the pieces from ‘Fashionlins’, a cinema production made up of eight film shorts that centres on the fashion world.

This multiple work, directed by Manuel M. Velasco, includes a film short dedicated exclusively to the work of Custo Barcelona, who will make a personal appearance in the final cut of the production, which stars Gran Canarian actresses Kira Miró and Leticia Etala.

The other great protagonist of the ‘Fashionlins’ line is Gran Canaria itself. The background scenes are at emblematic settings such as Puerto de Mogán, the town centre of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Las Canteras beach, El Confital and the Plaza del Espíritu Santo in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the road that leads to Fataga, and Roque Nublo.

“It really has been a wonderful initiative”, Dalmau points out. “What we do is a new form of communicating. Traditional communication is giving way to a new communication, which is all to do with the digital world, and ‘Fashionlins’ is a new expression of just that”, he underlines.

Custo, the designer who learned hard discipline and sacrifice in his time as a gymnast, took off to new horizons following a marvellous showing at Gran Canaria Moda Cálida. However, the visions of Maspalomas Dunes and the consistently gorgeous blue Atlantic surrounding the island also follow him around. He stresses how the island’s landscapes open your eyes and influence you if you are “a creative being”. No matter which planet you are from.
