Las Dunas de Maspalomas

Las Dunas de Maspalomas

Type of Natural Resource: Reserva Natural Especial

Location: San Bartolomé de Tirajana

Description

This reserve embraces 403.9 hectares of sand dunes. Located amidst these dunes is the Maspalomas lagoon, known as La Charca, an area of great ecological value and a bird nesting centre. This is a well preserved area but it is strongly influenced by human presence, which represents a serious threat to its survival. A large part of the flora and some of the bird species that visit the wetlands of this natural space are protected by national and regional regulations. There is also an abundance of sabulicolous insects ?some of which are indigenous ? that are related to African fauna and which are only found in this environment. The area is also of great scientific interest, with geomorphological and geological elements of great value that form a spectacular and unique landscape.
Location: San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
Surface area: 403.9 hectares.
