A Fresh Perspective on Playa del Inglés and the Maspalomas Dunes in Gran Canaria
The new viewpoint, surrounded by numerous native plants, has become a fresh attraction in the tourist area of Gran Canaria.
The view of Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas is one of Gran Canaria’s most iconic tourist and scenic landmarks. When arriving from the airport or the island’s capital, there comes a moment when you encounter one of those unforgettable landscapes—remarkable for its beauty, its sheer scale, and the sight of dunes that flow into a golden shoreline stretching as far as the eye can see. As Néstor Álamo’s song Maspalomas y tú says, “Down there in the South, asleep under the sun, there’s a beach,” with golden sand and a dazzling ocean—whether viewed from the shore or afar. The recently inaugurated viewpoint, accessible from the Veril area between the Anexo II Shopping Centre and the Costa Canaria Promenade, provides just such a vision: calm, peaceful, and with the perfect perspective of one of the most beautiful coastlines on the planet.
The 250-metre-long platform includes benches, lighting, and ample space from which to gaze out over the ocean, Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas, or El Veril from several vantage points. Around the viewpoint—and trailing down the slope—visitors will find around five hundred plants, including many native species. These showcase the island’s xerophytic vegetation to visitors and help make this new space a key point of interest in the south of Gran Canaria—complementing the natural wonders sculpted over time by wind, tide, and patience.
Amid dragon trees, wild olive trees, cardoons and tabaibas, one can sit and take in unforgettable sunrises and sunsets over the vast ocean—framed at every angle by graceful palms. From now on, walking along the coastline—especially from San Agustín Beach to Playa del Inglés—will offer the chance to pause at this new ‘main sail’, where one can take in all the subtle shades of the landscape. Those who lose themselves in the vast blue and gaze towards the glowing dunes in the distance—where the sand gleams like a miniature coastal desert by the Atlantic—will experience the full magic of this place.
The new viewpoint encourages us to slow down and breathe life in from this height—a place where one can daydream of distant voyages, following the endless trail of the ocean and its irresistible shade of blue, far from the noise and haste of the big cities. After a day on the beach, or before heading down to the sand, we now have a place of serenity and reflection—making our holidays just that little bit more unforgettable. From this elevation, we can savour the landscape even more deeply—a landscape that will return to us whenever we search our memories for a glimpse of paradise.
