Gran Canaria protects Roque Nublo

Visits to the Natural Monument of Gran Canaria can be made with a prior reservation.

Every place in the world has an image that identifies it — a photograph or a memory that stays with us when we are far away, recalling the place where we were once happy. In Gran Canaria, that place could be the Natural Monument of Roque Nublo, both for those who visit and for those who call the island “home”. It is always before our eyes when we ascend to the peak, or when we look from Tejeda or Artenara.

The Nublo is the totemic rock, the stone patiently sculpted by time, like the great works of art are created, because it is not only Roque Nublo that defines the height of beauty. There is a surrounding environment, just as there is a context in every story told: paths, trees, birds, endemic species, horizons, and the essential silence needed to connect with the most sacred part of the landscape. Because it is also a sacred environment for those seeking to connect with their essence and with the essence of nature — a magical, beautiful place where adjectives are never enough to express what one feels.

We all want to climb Roque Nublo at least once in our lives, or get closer to its peak when we arrive in Tejeda — both the island’s inhabitants and the many tourists who visit us. That is why the goal is to ensure that this visit has the care, safety, and proper steps it deserves, while still allowing everyone to reach it; but in an organised way, taking into account sustainability and the protection of such a delicate and well-designed environment. It is a space that transports us to another planet as soon as we reach the heights, although, as with everything worthwhile, there is also a path beforehand that anticipates that memorable encounter with one of the most beautiful and impressive volcanic formations on Earth.

To protect this miracle and to ensure that those who come here when we are no longer around can still enjoy it — and also to prevent its deterioration and to manage the actions of each visitor — visits have been regulated following the advice of those who know how to protect a natural environment and how to make its coexistence with tourism and visitors a sustainable symbiosis. That is why, if we now want to visit Roque Nublo, we must check all the information to arrange a prior reservation through www.grancanariasenderos.com and choose one of the two nearest parking areas to access it either by public transport or along the adjacent trails. We can do this with all the conveniences of modern technology — in a comfortable and quick way — adapting those permits to the needs and schedules of our journey. It is the least this island could do for its great landscape symbol, the one that gives its name to the island’s great musical anthem composed by Néstor Álamo.

We will continue climbing Roque Nublo, but we will do so as when we visit the theatre, a museum, or those landscapes that are carefully preserved so that we are never left orphaned of their presence. Protecting the Nublo was a duty for those with the responsibility to do so. To protect it and preserve it so that it can continue to be visited, and to safeguard what we know we need if we want to keep a landscape that makes us feel eternal. That is how you feel when you reach the peak.

Eternal, and grateful to nature and to time. That is how we want those who have not yet discovered it — or those who return — to feel. The mountainous heights of Gran Canaria are also the measure of our beauty.
