The Afurgad Journey through Firgas, in Gran Canaria

Firgas is inaugurating a mini-train route that includes a gastronomic tasting of local products from the town along the way.

Firgas unveils a new way of presenting itself. We already know that if we walk through its ravines and footpaths, we will find many of the last vestiges of what was once the Doramas Forest. In its historic centre, we can also find a tiled representation of all the municipalities of Gran Canaria. But now we can enjoy a circular tour of the town on a mini train which, in addition to showcasing many of its landscapes, allows us to savour its gastronomy. The Aguas de Firgas mini train takes us on a two-hour journey, with audio explanations in English, French, German and Spanish, revealing many of the attractions that visitors have sought out for centuries in this privileged corner of the island of Gran Canaria.

Bookings for the mini-train tour can be made through this link (www.aguaidetrains.com). In addition to the journey in a glass-covered vehicle that showcases the splendour of the greenery crowning the mountains of Firgas, we can also enjoy gofio from Buenlugar, fresh watercress cheese from the Quesería Pedrín, a banana juice or jams from the Deleite y Zumos factory, where the tour comes to an end. The route takes place every week from Wednesday to Sunday, with two departures each day.

The train departs from the tourist bus stop in the town centre, right next to the municipal car park, making it easy to find. The route begins with a stop at the Rincón de Marcos restaurant, where visitors can sample fresh cheese with watercress jam. From there, one could say that we enter paradise as the train, with its 50 seats, makes its way into the Barranco de Las Madres, passing by the Aguas de Firgas factory, before heading to the Tienda de Teresita — a landmark for lovers of tradition. This traditional shop preserves all the essence of such establishments from the old days. At the shop in the Barranco de Las Madres, visitors can taste a goat’s yoghurt with prickly pear jam. After this treat in the heart of nature, we return to the centre of Firgas and head up to the Fontana Rosa park, where we can enjoy spectacular views of Firgas and its surrounding area, along with a banana juice mixed with gofio. Next, the train takes us to the Deleite Canario factory to sample its mojos and homemade jams. We then return to the starting point with the feeling of having travelled through time while savouring many of the products that have brought fame to Firgas.

The end of this journey leaves an almost cinematic sensation, as if travelling for a couple of hours through landscapes that remain eternal in our memory, composing each frame of Firgas that we carry with us forever — along with the flavour of watercress and fresh cheese.
