‘Dedo de Dios’ in Agaete

El Dedo de Dios and the Roque Partido: Two names for the same symbol

The rock formation at the Port of Las Nieves, in Agaete lost its pinnacle in 2005, yet it still preserves the beauty of nature’s great works of art.

In Agaete it was always called the Roque Partido (‘Broken Rock’). Dedo de Dios (‘God’s Finger’) was the name given to it by Domingo Doreste, also known as Fray Lesco, the same man who spoke of Gran Canaria as a continent in miniature. This rock formation truly has something divine about it, it always has. We felt it twenty-five years ago, before tropical storm Delta brought down its upper pinnacle, and we still feel it now, in the shapes being created by the erosion of wind and ocean.

White broom in countryside around San Miguel Ravine

White magic in Gran Canaria

The winter blossoming of the Canary white retama broom plant  reveals one of the great ‘tricks’ of nature in Gran Canaria.

Someone seems to have unfurled a wintery white sheet over the ravines and hillsides in Gran Canaria. This mysterious-looking frost is, however, the result of the seasonal spectacle provided by the flowers on Canary white broom, on bushes that grow up to three metres in height. Their aromatic flowers take centre stage at this wintery scene, popping up at many different natural island settings, and are free to go and see.

The Néstor Álamo Museum

The musical cradle of Gran Canaria

The Néstor Álamo Museum is set in a beautiful 17th century building, and highlights the life and times of the composer and historian, author of timeless melodies.

It is always time for music here. The hands of the wall clock point to five o’clock, perhaps as a sign to someone who overcame the barriers of time, leaving behind an immortal legacy. Under the clock is a cradle, now covered by a white veil, where Néstor Álamo, this kind of Rennaissance creator, musicologist, historian and many other things besides, spent his first few days and months. Nowadays it is impossible for a musical band to conclude their repertoire without one or other of the songs composed by this author ringing out, born in 1906 in Santa María de Guía, in Gran Canaria.
