Sculpture of the Greetingman in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Gran Canaria island

The Greetingman welcomes travellers arriving in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

The sculpture, located in Plaza de Canarias, in front of Santa Catalina Quay, symbolizes the close relationship between the Republic of Korea and Gran Canaria.

Visitors to the port area of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will encounter a six-meter-tall, two-meter-wide figure weighing two tonnes, made of aluminium with a steel inner structure. It is impossible to miss, and you can’t help but lift your gaze when standing before it. This is the Greetingman, a donation from the Republic of Korea (South Korea) to commemorate sixty years of Korean presence at the Port of Las Palmas and seventy years of diplomatic relations between Spain and Korea.

The Néstor Álamo Museum

The musical cradle of Gran Canaria

The Néstor Álamo Museum is set in a beautiful 17th century building, and highlights the life and times of the composer and historian, author of timeless melodies.

It is always time for music here. The hands of the wall clock point to five o’clock, perhaps as a sign to someone who overcame the barriers of time, leaving behind an immortal legacy. Under the clock is a cradle, now covered by a white veil, where Néstor Álamo, this kind of Rennaissance creator, musicologist, historian and many other things besides, spent his first few days and months. Nowadays it is impossible for a musical band to conclude their repertoire without one or other of the songs composed by this author ringing out, born in 1906 in Santa María de Guía, in Gran Canaria.

Winter solstice

Winter lights burst onto the stage

The Winter solstice brings with it a spectacle of light and a surge of emotion at the summit of Gran Canaria.

The shortest day of the year actually begins the evening before, with a blanket of stars covering the stage before the performance begins. Under the steep slope of Mesa de Acusa, an abyss of ancient eruptions etched into the landscape, lies the stalls and the audience, on this occasion the lens of a camera, which points towards the spot where the real protagonist of the winter solstice at the summit of Gran Canaria is waiting in the wings: the first winter light.
