Muelle Viejo, Arinaga

Arinaga´s old jetty

The municipality of Agüimes has recently opened a new bathing site to the public in the old jetty located in Arinaga, popularly known as Muelle Viejo. This jetty was built at the end of the 19th century and is considered of great historical and ethnographic value.

The Muelle Viejo is half hidden at the foot of the mountain where the current lighthouse stands, in Punta de Arinaga. To the north, we find the El Cabrón beach, where divers plunge into the sea every day to explore the crystalline ocean, full of fish, starfish, seahorses, and large conch shells once used by the inhabitants of Gran Canaria.

Faro de Maspalomas

Lighthouses that shine on Gran Canaria

Construction of the Maspalomas Lighthouse was a real feat of engineering, so much so that they even had to build a small dock to bring in all the building materials. It is undoubtedly the most photographed lighthouse on Gran Canaria and its surroundings make it even more striking.

You can find it in the south, in the Island´s popular tourist area, and next to the Dunes of Maspalomas Special Nature Reserve, a unique collection of ecosystems protected by law since 1987. The dunes have also been the backdrop to some well-known TV shows and films like Netflix's “The Witcher” or “Clash of the Titans”.

Gran Canaria, a flight of wishing and remembering

Gran Canaria invites you on a 360º trip through some of the amazing hidden spots.

What is that sound in your house today? It sounds like the fast tapping of a tiny hammer. It comes from deep inside the pine forests around the Presa de las Niñas reservoir, inland on Gran Canaria, and it is actually the great spotted woodpeckers hammering away at the pine trunks. You can’t see it, but you can feel it and imagine it on our 360 degree trip around the island that will give you a bird’s eye view, soaring through the air following all the wishes that are closer to coming true with each day that passes.

Faro de Arinaga

Faro de Arinaga: a Kingdom between the Land and the Sea

Faro de Arinaga (Arinaga Lighthouse), in Gran Canaria, crowns and watches over a coastal and inland space conforming a landscape of high natural value.

Getting to the foot of a lighthouse somehow feels like and adventure. This feeling is linked to the stories associated with these buildings, linked to the sea fare over the centuries, to captains and crews looking for the saving light in stormy nights, to lonely lighthouse keepers and beautiful, remote places. This halo, where imagination and reality become one, surrounds Arinaga lighthouse, in the coast of Agüimes, Gran Canaria, the lighthouse guiding these words today.

Faro de Sardina, Gáldar

Sardina Lighthouse talks to the Atlantic

The lighthouse at Sardina del Norte, in Gran Canaria, and the surrounding area create an atmosphere akin to the beginning and the end of the world.

The old lighthouse at Sardina del Norte, on the Gáldar coast, to the northeast of Gran Canaria, flashed its first beam over this corner of the Atlantic on 15th February 1891. The current structure, built on the same site, replacing the former one there in 1986, took over the task of guarding the sublime rocky coastline where the vigorous waves come crashing in almost at slow motion speed, doubtless tired after their long oceanic voyage.

El Puertillo, Arucas

The social hub at El Puertillo Beach

El Puertillo Beach, in Arucas, Gran Canaria, is an attractive and balanced blend of environments with a variety of uses.

The early morning sun rises up behind the silhouette of the mountains and begins to warm the sand, while Manuel Sosa and his group of friends observe the antics of a group of surfers, on El Puertillo Beach, at the northwest coast of Gran Canaria. Manuel is 92 years old and fondly recalls past times when those who went bathing, and that means properly bathing, numbered barely two or three: a couple from local village Bañaderos, along with another bather from Arucas. Many years and thousands of dawns on, Manuel comes here every day and sits along the promenade overlooking the ocean, just to check it is the same sea out there, while his Puertillo has become a dearly beloved jewel along the Arucas coastline.

Gran Canaria Blue

Gran Canaria Blue, the ocean in your hands

The new Gran Canaria Blue website enables visitors to learn about and make bookings on the fascinating range of nautical activities on the island.

There they go. Someone on board points to the spot where a mysterious shape slinks around under the water, moving ever nearer to the surface. The contained excitement lasts barely a few instants, in the a few short seconds the dolphins take to emerge and once again transform the waters of Gran Canaria into a blue canvass with their manoeuvres, jumps and somersaults. In this way, with the same precision with which the pod of dolphins moves forward, another dream has been fulfilled on an island in whose waters a third of all known cetaceans have been spotted.

El Burrero

Burrero Beach: its sea and its people

El Burrero Beach, in Gran Canaria, has a clearly defined personality and a history etched in salt letters.

The town of El Burrero spends its days with one foot on land and the other in the Atlantic. This coastal spot is an extension of the sea that laps up to the vibrant shores of the municipality of Ingenio, in Gran Canaria. They are like two worlds that blend in together and are constantly overlapping eachother. Hence there are houses whose entrances bear the sculptures of dolphins, while others have giant snails decorating their inside walls, and even huge waves with slim palm trees painted onto walls.

La Garita beach

La Garita beach, moon-like and earth-like

The urban and the wild fuse together naturally at La Garita beach in Gran Canaria, and in its surrounding environment.

The stunning shorelines around Gran Canaria reveal themselves in different guises. Sometimes they can be decked out in a black suit, as is the case of the cosy little volcanic beach at Garita, on the Telde coastline, close to both Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and to the south of the island. A burning volcanic spirit, which led to the formation of this Atlantic territory, is clearly apparent around here. La Garita is another of the gifts of nature that this spectacular geological formation provided for the future.
