Walking over a sea of clouds

Walking over a sea of clouds

They have left their worries behind, just a flight away. Duties and work parked for a long, long stay. And now they have decided to spend time only on themselves. They will get to know Gran Canaria’s hinterland. Explore without any haste the many trails that wind within pine forests. Mountain-day today. Tomorrow: the beach.

A stroll for two. A walk through the heart of the Biosphere Reserve.

For Gran Canaria is not merely an island full of beaches. It is also a small continent holding a thousand different spots and a specially-rich wildlife, which has earned it UNESCO’s recognition as Biosphere Reserve. Nearly half the island lies within the Reserve, comprising a large number of rural communities devoted to the most traditional undertakings.

But let us go back to these two, who walk quite peacefully along royal paths. Yesterday, they were bathing at Maspalomas. Today, they walk through one of the island’s pine forests. After a little over an hour off the beach, they have at last found the sea of clouds. They could not believe an island could have so many weather differences. And they had to climb to the summit of the very high central part to see with their own eyes that they may be only two steps from the sky, at only two steps from the sea.

They could not understand it yesterday. Well. It’s only because they are the type of people who need to see to believe.
